Elementary Pilot
This is a four day course leading to the BHPA Elementary Pilot rating, and represents the halfway point towards Club Pilot and being able to fly on your own. The first two days are the same as the two day introduction above.
By the end of the EP course, you should be able to control your wing on and off the ground, assess the weather and the flying site, do your own pre-flight checks, and make high solo flights including 180° turns and with a controlled landing.
Club Pilot
The Club Pilot course follows on from the Elementary Pilot course, and covers more advanced flying skill that you will need, including soaring in ridge lift, rapid descent techniques and, in suitable conditions, landing on the top or side of the hill instead of in the bottom landing field. You also study some more theory topics relating to the weather, flight theory and air law.
The CP course usually takes between four and six days after the EP course, depending on the weather conditions. (There are a number of tasks to sign off that you will only be able to complete when the weather cooperates!) Once you have successfully completed the course, you will have the BHPA Club Pilot rating and will be free to fly BHPA club sites on your own.
