The forecast for today looked strong for North Wales so a trip to the coast or Long Mountain was on. The Mynd was an option but looked a little too much North in it to make the journey. As I could not make the morning I opted for Long Mountain.
As I drove there early afternoon I could see two PG’s flying. When I arrived there was no one in the air? Arriving on launch I met Sprinty and Dave McKenzie. Both were ground handling bit in a WNW direction. Both confirmed it was lumpy and bumpy. Within an hour the wind had dropped to 3Mph. We packed up and headed north to Llangollen.
Upon arrival we saw two HG’s in the air. At launch it was blowing through at 18 – 22Mph but looked smooth. Dave launched and said it was very smooth and lifty. Sprinty got out the Takoo Tandem, we strapped in and with Dave’s help launched. It was smooth and lifty in places. The flying was very peaceful tonight and with only Dave and us on the tandem flying wasn’t very busy.
We landed after a few spots of rain came down on us and went back to launch. My turn this time, off we went and once again it was good simple flying in really gentle lift. After 20 minutes we landed once more for a quick break.
Two young lads turned up and we offered them the tandem passenger seat, one was up for it the other was nervous so we decided not to fly him. The young lad called Jack was amazed at how good this flying lark was and asked if he could fly again with us sometime. It’s a great feeling when you give someone the experience of flight. He said that when he came out this evening he had no idea he would be floating over Llangollen at 1000’ Magic.
Paul Thompson joined us later in the evening and had a quick flight before landing as it got a tad strong.
We top landed and went back to launch for Sprinty to have a final flight with me as a passenger, alas the wind speed had picked up to 25Mph so we canned it, packed up and went home.
Very unexpected but superb at the same time.
Just putting the video together.

Long Mountain was OK but not as forecast. Caught one thermal to 400ft ato but most of the time scratching around approx 50 - 80ft ato.
Llangollen was a real bonus. Great to get some more coaching in on the tandem with the ridge working so well and the lift band being so big. Enjoyed being the passenger too although I did start to feel a a bit air sick after 30mins or so which was a real surprise as I have never felt sick in 5 years of flying!

thought it would be too windy there. went to mynd. saw dj flying lawley. met chris h on way up and he said it was light then strong and gusty. so i nearly turned round and went home. could see steve d(?) flying with dj now though. gets my goat seeing other people fly when i'm not. so kept on going. there were 3 on mynd. had a nice 40 mins. dave and steve were still flying when i went home for a pie

Good to see someone prepared to give a little to the youth of today. You never know, young Jack could get involved in the sport. (future pilot!"
